Math Exams Over!

Well, we have come to the end of this road!  It is time to move on and enjoy whatever summer plans we have: hagwan, beach, travel, family, etc!  Do it all with the knowledge that I have considered it a privilege and a learning experience to have worked with each of you.  You will all have a special place in my heart as my first students when I got to come back home to TCIS.

In closing, I wish to leave one of my favorite Irish blessings that my choir at home used to sing all the time, and it always made tears come to my eyes — even as a kid:

May the road rise to meet you.

May the wind blow at your back.

May the sun shine warmly on your face.

May the rain fall softly on your fields.

And until we meet again, may the Lord God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Love you,

Mrs. Smith

A Block (Day 2) Wed., May 23 – Study Guide

We went over the study guide today!

Here’s a copy if you lose yours:  Semester 2 Algebra Review

May 23, 2012

G Block (Day 2) Wed., May 23 – Volume and Surface Area of each solid

You cut out the nets and measured them to calculate volume and surface area for each.

You have your review packets, so begin studying as soon as possible.  Here’s a copy in case you have lost yours: 2nd Semester Review

We will get out the folders with tests from the past and use the packets to study on Friday.

E Block (Day 2) Wed., May 23 – Review

You received your review sheet today.  Look over it.  The topics we will be discussing tomorrow are: Fractions (especially adding/ subtracting unlike denominators), Distributive property with fractions, Slope-Intercept form, and patterns.  We will need to move quickly to be able to cover all of that in the fifty minute class period.

Here’s a copy of the review sheet if you need it! Semester 2 Algebra Review

H block (Day 2) Wed., May 23 – Quizzes returned and Space discussed

We talked about some glitches you face when working with trig and special right triangles.

We went through a long lecture on the differences between surface area and volume and why the general forms of 2B + L work for prisms and B + L work for pyramids in surface area, and why Bh works for volume of prisms and 1/3 Bh works for volume of pyramids.

You have your review packets now, so you may begin studying for your exam.  We will work on them tomorrow.  You will not receive another printed copy.  If you lose it, go here: 2nd Semester Review

G Block (Day 1) Tues., May 22 – Measuring Space

We discussed the differences between surface area and volume.  You made posters declaring the differences.  You also started cutting out the nets you will use to calculate surface area and volume.

You have review packets.  Begin the review on your own.  You will look over old tests and such on Friday or whenever you come after school.  2nd Semester Review

Projects need to be turned in as soon as possible.  They are already late.

Next class you will continue working with surface area and volume.

A BLock (Day 1) Tues., May 22 – Review of Equations and Graphing

We will be reviewing for your exam next class.

H Block (Day 6) Mon., May 21 – Area! Apothems! Watch out for the apothems!

Hahahaha  what a hilarious class you are!  I can’t believe people actually slept through some of that!!

We had a riveting lesson that connected every area formula back to quadrilaterals: which means that, really, the only area formula you need to remember isArea = Base x Height.  Take a look at the photo remember how we connected it all:

We talked a little about the final exam.  I am working to gather materials for you to begin studying — you eager little beavers.  I have (technically) begun working on your final exam since i have the formula sheet done.  I will show that to you next class.

Here are the problems you were working on at the end of class.  You will put the answers to these on the board when we start class on Wednesday.

I have a cool plan for talking about surface area and volume that I can’t wait to try out!  I think it’ll be cool.  Well, we’ll see!

Some of my favorite remarks from this class today:

  1. Someone: It’s only the girls who are laughing right now.

Me: Except Branford!  He’s with us!

Sam: Branford’s a girl!

Me: He’s not a girl!

Abby (I think): No, he’s just smart!

2. Margaret laughing so hard she had to wipe away tears.  What a crazy class!

3.  ME;  Do you think they’re sleeping or just playing apothem?

4.  (After I had talked about the beginning formulas and there being nothing new under the sun) Me: So are there any questions?

Sarah: Did ou know there was an eclipse today?

So what else was funny today?

E Block (Day 6) Mon., May 21 – Back to the Basics

Solving equations.  We solved equations that had variables on both sides and ones that needed to e simplified before solving.  I want you to be so familiar twith the rules of equations that they stick in your heads over the summer.

We are almost done, but we’re not done yet!

Next Class we will continue working with solving these different types of equations.  Then we will review.

G Block (Day 5) Fri., May 18 – Area and Projects

Your projects need to be turned in by tonight!  Height of a Structure

WE briefly discussed area today to prepare the way for our exploration on Tuesday of volume and surface area.
